Terni and Trekking at the Waterfall
The Program – Upper Tiber Valley
The Program – Terni and the Marmore Waterfall. Terni is rarely visited before reaching the waterfall that made it famous; yet its historic center preserves the Basilica of Saint Valentine, which houses the relics of the patron saint of lovers, and an urban layout that tells centuries of industrial and religious history intertwined. The itinerary then moves toward the Marmore Waterfall, the tallest artificial waterfall in Europe, created by the Romans in 271 BC to reclaim the Reatina plain. A drop of 165 meters, distributed across three tiers, where the waters of the Velino plunge into the Nera with a force you feel before you even see it. The trekking route leads through various observation points, each offering a different perspective on the waterfall: from below, where the mist wets the path, to the highest viewpoints, where the panorama opens over the entire valley. A typical lunch closes the day with the flavors of Terni’s traditional cuisine.
Travel Advisor’s Recommendation
The Marmore Waterfall becomes truly fascinating when interpreted, not just observed: the control of water flow and its engineering history are what distinguish it from a simple natural attraction.
